Home in a Box

Home in a Box is a practical and caring initiative by the Mercy Foundation that helps individuals and families transition from homelessness into permanent housing with dignity and comfort.

For many people who have experienced long-term homelessness, moving into a new home is both an overwhelming experience—especially when they have few or no possessions. The cost of setting up a home can be prohibitive. That’s where Home in a Box steps in.

Each Home in a Box contains brand new, high-quality essentials to help create a welcoming home:

  • Sheets, towels, pillows, and a quilt
  • Dinner set, cutlery, glasses
  • Frypan, saucepan,
  • Ttoaster, and kettle
  • Kitchenware and utensils

The Home in a Box is personalised for the recipient with generous donations of hand crafted blankets, quilts and toiletries.
A Kid’s Pack is also available to support children settling into their new environment with comfort and care.

Home in a Box is available to individuals and families in the Sydney region:

  • Who have experienced chronic homelessness
  • Who are moving into permanent housing (not transitional housing)
  • Who have no financial means to furnish set up their new home

Support or tenancy workers apply on behalf of their clients and deliver the boxes directly to them.

Since its inception, over 500 Home in a Box sets es have been distributed across Sydney and surrounding regions. The program not only provides physical items but also restores a sense of dignity, stability, and hope. As one recipient shared:

“When you come off the street, you have nothing. When I received these boxes, I was overwhelmed that there are people willing to help a guy like me set up a home.”
